장인 정신

 "Perfection is eventually achieved not when nothing more can be added but when nothing more can be taken away."

It's the phrase writen in the door of my father's office. I still remember this even though i memorized this more than 5 years ago.

TAs should know ths, all they do is checking copies, as well as counting pages of reports. I knew most of them didn't volunteered but once they are in charge of TA, they should do their best, and that's at least i know about attitudes of engineers.

 I grow up hearing and seeing what real engineers should be from my father deeply committed to engineering. I can proclaim w/ pride that may dad is the real engineer. He have shown about it through his entire life, the reason why I admire him so much.

 Being an engineer isn't just having a job in EE or such. It's changing one's attitude. The attitude of placing highest priority on consumers. It's really similar to 장인정신. and it's what we should regain.

 난 오늘날 엔지니어가 가져야 할 가장 중요한 태도는 장인정신이라고 생각한다. 하지만 그것만으로는 부족하다.

현대판 장인정신은 예전의 장인혼에 Time scheduling 이다. 무한경쟁사회에 살고 있는 현재의 엔지니어들에겐, 아니 모든 사람들에겐 Limited time 뿐이다. 경쟁이란 누군가 먼저 개발해 버리면 그보다 조금더 성능이 뛰어나다고 해서 그렇게 인정받지 못하는 것이다. 또한 현재의 공학은 혼자서는 할수가 없다. 팀을 이루어서 하게 될 경우 단가로 이어지는 개발비 역시 무시할 수 없게 된다.

모든 일이 그렇듯 완성도를 1%에서 80%까지 올리는 것은 그리 어려운 일이 아니다. 하지만 98%에서 99%로 올리기 위해선 얼마의 노력이 들어가야 할지 알수 없다. 예전의 장인들이 100%를 바라며 자신의 기준에 합당치 않았던 것들을 가차없이 깨버렸던 것들과는 다르게 자신의 한정된 시간과 자원을 바탕으로 해서 최선의 물건을 만드는것, 이것이 현대의 장인정신이고 엔지니어가 가져야 할 마음가짐이 아닐까
