I am a Ph.D. student in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Seoul National University, Korea. I am expecting to graduate in February 2018 and I am looking for a postdoctoral position. I was always an admirer of your lab’s great work in robotics area. I think I can be a good match to your lab, which will be verified in my enclosed resume. 

 

My research experience in graduate school is mainly concentrated in robotics and machine learning areas. My main research topic is robust learning from demonstration (LfD) where demonstrations are collected from multiple demonstrators with different proficiencies and was awarded as an ICRA best paper finalist with this topic in 2016. Recently, I am focusing on modeling uncertainty in deep learning with its application to uncertainty-aware LfD where our paper can be found on https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.02249. I believe 'knowing what we do not know' is crucial for deploying a robotics application in a real-world with human-beings. 

I have published two journal papers to RAS and JDSMC and eight conference papers (three ICRA, three IROS, CDC, and RO-MAN) as a first author.  I also have participated in four government and corporate projects and performed a leading role. I believe my unique experience will be useful in your lab.I also have various programming experiences using MATLAB, C++, and Python and got more than 3,000 stars on the GitHub (https://github.com/sjchoi86) which I believe to facilitate implementing robotic applications.

I am interested in the postdoctoral position available in your laboratory at UC Berkeley that was recently advertised in [robotics-worldwide]. I am currently a Ph.D. candidate under Dr. Songhwai Oh's supervision in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Seoul National University.

My research experience in the graduate school is mainly concentrated in learning from demonstration where both behavior cloning and inverse reinforcement learning are studied. In particular, my main research topic is robust learning from demonstration where demonstrations are collected from multiple demonstrators with different proficiency levels. To handle this issue, we presented a leverage optimization framework that can optimize leverage (or proficiency level) of each demonstration by modeling different demonstrators with correlated Gaussian processes. The preliminary version of leverage optimization was presented in ICRA 2016 and was awarded as an ICRA best conference paper finalist. I have published ten papers in both ICRA and IROS (six as a first author). 

Recently, I am focussing on modeling uncertainty in deep learning methods with its application to uncertainty-aware learning from demonstration and this work has been submitted to ICRA 2018. I believe 'knowing what we do not know' is crucial for deploying practical learning from demonstration applications in a real-world with human-beings.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am interested in the postdoctoral position in robotics available at Disney Research Los Angeles. I am currently a Ph.D. candidate under Dr. Songhwai Oh's supervision in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Seoul National University. 

My research experience in the graduate school is mainly concentrated robotics and machine learning areas. My main research topic is robust learning from demonstration where demonstrations are collected from multiple demonstrators with different proficiencies [1] and was awarded as an ICRA best paper finalist in 2016. Recently, I am focusing on human-robot cooperation where the motion trajectory of a human co-worker is represented using both spatial and temporal properties with Gaussian processes and the resulting trajectory of a manipulator is optimized via sample-based planner. The preliminary version of this work [2] is submitted to ICRA 2018. 

I had an opportunity to do an internship at Disney Research Los Angeles from August to November in 2017 under Dr. Joohyung Kim's supervision where I successfully used reinforcement learning to solve a quadruped locomotion problem for a Snapbot. I have published two journal papers to Robotics and Autonomous Systems and journal of dynamic systems measurement and control and eight conference papers (three ICRA, three IROS, and RO-MAN) as a first author. I also have various programming experience in embedded programming using C and C++ and high-level programming using MATLAB and Python which I believe to facilitate implementing robotic applications.
